Preparing for Colonoscopy

Drawing on his earlier career in full-time academic gastroenterology (first at the National Institutes of Health, then as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and later at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine), Dr. Cherner brings to his practice those scientific advances he judges likely to benefit his patients. Although he developed a love for a broad array of gastroenterological disorders during his training (Fellowship) at Emory, it was in the field of regulation of secretion of stomach acid and pepsin, and its application to peptic ulcer disease, acid reflux, and Barrett’s esophagus, that Dr. Cherner established his early reputation (see www.drjaycherner.com/dr-cherner.php) He was privileged to be part of the team that was the first to investigate the use of Prilosec (omeprazole), Pepcid (famotidine) and Sandostatin (ocreotide) among patients in this country, and honored by the publication of those three separate studies in Gastroenterology and the New England Journal of Medicine. The recognition bestowed upon his work identifying the merits and shortcomings of “Portal Venous Sampling for Gastrin” by its inclusion in the Yearbook of Gastroenterology of 1985 was a highpoint that presaged his current emphasis on performing only those tests that are truly beneficial to a patient’s outcome. But although he derived much satisfaction from his publication of numerous important studies (see www.jaycherner.com/publications.php) his federally-funded research, his teaching of young doctors, and his role as Consultant and Reviewer for prestigious medical journals, something was missing. His academic successes had caused him to drift away from the very reason he chose to become a doctor in the first place – to help people combat and prevent illness.

Therefore, he returned to the bedside, establishing North Atlanta Gastroenterology, P.C. in 1992, a solo practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of virtually every condition of the digestive system and liver. In this capacity he served the residents of North Fulton and Forsyth and Dawson counties for the next nineteen years, treating over 17,000 patients, performing over 15,000 colonoscopies and 7,000 upper endoscopies. Patients have learned that what distinguishes the practice of Dr. Cherner are two guiding principles: One is the unusual amount of time he spends with patients, primarily listening to their answers to his probing questions, but sometimes just listening, and always explaining. He does this himself, having resisted the engagement of “physician extenders,” to enhance efficiency (see more patients). The other guiding principle is his deeply-rooted commitment to patient advocacy –his belief that it is the physician’s responsibility to always do what is best for the patient, regardless of what it takes. Be it obtaining a prior authorization for insurance coverage of medications you need, or referral to an expert located elsewhere in the U.S.A., Dr. Cherner and is staff will go the extra mile to do what is best for you and to get you what you need.

On January 1, 2011, Dr. Cherner merged his solo practice with the practice of four other highly experienced gastroenterologists who share his vision and standards, to become Gastroenterology Consultants, P.C. The new practice preserves the independence and practice style of each of the physicians, as well as former office locations and staffs. This merger has added greater range and depth of services. If there is a procedure Dr. Cherner does not perform personally, at least one of his partners will usually be able to fill that gap with the highest level of proficiency. Most importantly, the merger has enabled Dr. Cherner and his partners to open their own physician-run Georgia Endoscopy Center, LLC , a state-of-the art out-patient AAAHC-accredited Ambulatory Surgical Center in Alpharetta, dedicated exclusively to colonoscopy and upper endoscopy performed by Dr. Cherner and his partners. As its Medical Director for the Center's first five years, Dr. Cherner has made sure that his own standards of excellence are upheld through every aspect of the Center.
